Topwater Tactics: Mastering the Southern August Bite
Credit: Shaye Baker
Hey y’all, welcome to the sweltering embrace of August in the South, where the air's as thick as a livewell full of shad! It might be hot, but the bass action is hotter if you know when and where to cast those topwater lures.
Early Bird Gets the Bass
August down here ain't for the faint-hearted — you gotta rise with the sun to capitalize on that first light. There’s a certain magic in the air, a promise of explosive topwater bites as the sun peeks over the horizon. A buzzbait or a Whopper Plopper is your best friend during these wee hours. Toss it out, work it fast, and get ready for some of the most exciting strikes you’ll ever witness!
The Midday Hustle
As the sun climbs, the shade becomes precious real estate. Bass know this too, camping out in pockets of shade close to the bank. This is where patience and precision come in. Slow it down with a Spook or a popper to tempt those lurkers out from under their leafy umbrellas. If you can work a hollow-body frog over the lily pads, you might just witness a spectacular leap of a bass trying to snatch it from above.
Enter the Fuzz
Now, I know some of y’all might be skeptical, but fuzzy baits are the next big thing and I’m diving in headfirst this August. The strands on these baits dance in the water like a Texas two-step, luring bass even when they’re being finicky. Set it up with finesse techniques like a drop shot or Ned rig, and let the bait do its thing.
The Mayfly Mantra
If you’re lucky enough to stumble upon a mayfly hatch, hold onto your rods tight, because you're about to hit the jackpot! Those tiny insects bring together a smorgasbord of fish. Use poppers or buzzbaits that mimic small bream to nab those trophy bass that come up for the feast.
Go Deep or Go Home
Of course, if topwater cools off, don’t be afraid to switch things up. In shaded pockets of vegetation or deeper waters where the sun can’t find them, a well-placed jig or crankbait may just save the day.
August fishing in the South is a dance — get your timing and rhythm right, and you’ll leave the water with stories to brag about. Remember, anglers, it’s not only about the catch but the chase too. So grab your tackle, and let’s make some waves this summer!

Cassie Ray
Hey y'all — I'm Cassie Ray, born on the Texas Gulf Coast with a tackle box in one hand and shrimp boots on the other. I grew up running the jetties and slinging live bait from Matagorda to Port O'Connor. Saltwater's in my blood — and so is showing up for the women who fish just as hard (and often better) than the guys. I love a good redfish run, a cold Shiner, and gear that doesn't pink-wash my passion. Let's hook up — in the fishing sense, of course.
